The Arts at One Trust: Celebrating Creativity and Connection

At One Trust, the arts are not an afterthought — they are at the heart of what we do. Whether through music, painting, or sculpture, we see every day how creativity has the power to connect people in ways that words often cannot. For individuals with profound and multiple learning disabilities, autism, or complex needs, the arts can open new doors to expression, joy, and belonging.

Over the years, it has been our privilege to nurture and support many artists and musicians. Some have gone on to achieve recognition beyond our community, and it is always inspiring to see how their talents flourish when given the right opportunities.

That is why we are especially proud to share the news that one of our former artists, Nnena Kalu, has been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize — one of the most prestigious awards in the art world.

A Journey from One Trust to the World Stage

We had the privilege of working with Nnena at the beginning of her artistic journey. Even then, her creativity and energy were unmistakable. Her large-scale sculptures, drawings, and paintings are now celebrated internationally, resonating with audiences through their raw intensity and distinctive voice.

While we are honoured to have been part of Nnena’s early development, it is important to acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of Charlotte Hollinshead of ActionSpace. Charlotte has stood beside Nnena throughout her meteoric rise, helping to ensure her work reached the audiences it deserves.

Together, Nnena and Charlotte have travelled the world, exhibiting in renowned galleries and sharing Nnena’s unique vision with a global stage. Their journey is a testament not only to talent, but also to commitment, advocacy, and the power of believing in someone’s potential.

A Personal Reflection

For me, this story carries a deeper message about what we do at One Trust. It reminds us that the people we support are not defined by their disabilities, but by their abilities, their passions, and their potential. Creativity — in all its forms — is a bridge to self-expression and recognition.

I also want to pay personal tribute to Charlotte. At a time when funding for Nnena’s support was at risk, which might have closed the door to the recognition she so richly deserves, Charlotte stood firm. She advocated, she persisted, and she ensured that Nnena’s talent would not be overlooked. That kind of dedication is inspirational, and it mirrors the values we hold dear at One Trust.

Looking Ahead

As we wish Nnena every success with this year’s Turner Prize, we also celebrate what her story represents. It shows the world what is possible when creativity is nurtured, when advocacy is strong, and when people with complex needs are given the opportunity to shine.

At One Trust, we remain committed to ensuring that every individual we support has the chance to explore their creative potential — whether on the world stage or in the joy of creating something deeply personal.

Congratulations, Nnena. And thank you, Charlotte. Your journey together inspires us all.
